What Is Umrah
Umrah is an Arabic term that means “visit” in English. Umrah, on the other hand, means “lesser pilgrimage” in the Islamic language and describes a journey to Makkah’s Holy Ka’abah. It’s a form of worship inspired by Muhammad’s example and the teachings of Allah (Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam).
Four Basic Pillars Of Umrah
Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’ee, and Halq are the four cornerstones of the Umrah rite. In this article, we’re going to examine each of these points in great detail.
Ihram
Ihram is a pre-Hajj or Umrah rite that must be performed. Your Umrah or Hajj will not be valid until you take Ihram. What, then, is Ihram? When completing Hajj or Umrah, a pilgrim must enter and remain in the state of Ihram. In order to enter the holy state, one must first perform rites of purification and dress appropriately.
- A man is not allowed to trim his nails or shave his beard.
- In this society, men are not permitted to dress in garments that have been sewn or woven. For women, Ihram consists of any all-white or all-black garment that covers the whole body, including the head, chest, and legs, but not the face or hands. Therefore, ladies might feel comfortable wearing their own sewn garments on the Hajj or Umrah.
- Females should cover up everything except their faces and hands.
- Perfumes, deodorants, aftershaves, and scented soaps are all prohibited. You may use the unscented soaps that are given on the flight.
- Inappropriate sexual behaviour of any kind is forbidden for pilgrims.
- Animals and vegetation cannot be taken by a pilgrim.
How To Make Umrah Niyah
The niyyah to perform Umrah or ihram must be done before crossing a pilgrim at Meeqat, which is an essential guideline to keep in mind. Talbiyah is a unique prayer that pilgrims should keep chanting till they reach Masjid Al-Haram. Niyyah is the intrinsic purpose of conducting any act of devotion.
Those doing Hajj or Umrah must stop at certain locations called meeqats, which the Prophet Muhammad (Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam) established as a requirement for entering the holy condition of Ihram.
Tawaf Al-Umrah
Tawaf entails circling the Ka’abah seven times in a counterclockwise direction. Even though there are five distinct kinds of Tawaf, we’ll focus on Tawaf Al-Umrah since it’s a required aspect of the Umrah.
Starting Point
When in Mataf, follow the Sunnah of Tawaf Al-Umrah by performing Idtiba or exposing the right shoulder. Simply slip the top Ihram sheet under your right armpit and drape it over your left shoulder to complete this ritual. For the duration of the Tawaf, remember to keep your right shoulder exposed. Tawaf begins at the corner of the Ka’abah where Hajr Al-Aswad, also known as the black stone, is located. It is customary to face the Ka’abah with the black stone on your right side. It is here that you will say the niyyah that will officially start your Tawaf.
Salah Al-Tawaf
This is a reference to the two rakahs of Salah that follow Tawaf. Salah should ideally be performed close to Maqam-e-Ibrahim, but as it is located in Mataf, that isn’t always practical. Because of this, you may do this salah in any part of the mosque.
Zamzam
Visit the Zamzam well in Masjid al-Haram after completing the ritual of Salah al-Tawaf. You may get the water from any of the fountains or dispensers in the neighbourhood. Make as many duas as you can at this stop, as they are accepted.
Sa’ee
Sa’ee is required in Umrah much as Tawaf is. It consists of making seven trips between the hills of Safa and Marwah. Return to Hajr Al-Aswad to repeat Istilam after finishing Tawaf and Salah Al-Tawaf, then go to Safa hill to start Sa’ee when you reach the base of Safa.
Halq or Taqsir
Once Sa’ee is complete, you may end your Ihram observance by performing Halq or Taqsir. You will remain in Ihram until you do this very important action. When discussing hairstyles, Halq indicates a full head shave, while Taqsir is a shorter cut.
To finish the procedure, shave your head even if you don’t have any hair. A fingertip’s worth of hair must be shaved off from either side of the head if taqsir is to be performed. In the same way that you’re free to trim your own locks, you’re also free to hire someone else to do it.
In contrast, women are not allowed to perform Halq. No matter how short their hair is, just a fingertip’s worth of length has to be snipped off the end.
Ending Ihram
In order to leave the Ihram state, you must perform either Halq or Taqsir. When Ihram is over, you may go back to wearing perfume, trimming your nails, having sexual intercourse, etc., as normal. Putting on more casual attire is permitted at this time. If your Umrah is included in Hajj, however, the prohibition on marital relations will stay in effect until Tawaf al-Ziyarah, although the other stipulations of Ihram will be eliminated.

How Much Time is Require To Perform Umrah
The time took in performing Umrah is very variable and is affected by a number of factors, including the weather, the number of people in attendance, the individual’s speed, and whether or not breaks are taken between the rites. Tawaf and Sa’ee take the most time during Umrah. Each of them will typically take two hours under ideal conditions. In such a situation, your Umrah can take three or four hours to complete. It may take a lot longer at peak times.
